  • 4 cups sliced peeled apples Use a mix of apples for complexity, like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Helps keep apples from browning.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar Used for tossing with the apples.
For the topping
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup brown sugar Can substitute with white sugar if necessary.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar Remaining sugar for topping mixture.
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened Ensure butter is softened for a crumbly topping.
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a big bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, cinnamon, and 1/4 cup granulated sugar until well mixed.
  3. In another bowl, combine flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, remaining granulated sugar, salt, and softened butter until the mixture is crumbly.
  4. Press half of the oat mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  5. Layer the apple mixture evenly on top of the crust.
  6. Sprinkle the remaining oat mixture over the apples.
Baking
  1. Bake for 35-40 minutes until the topping is golden brown.
  2. Allow to cool before cutting into bars.

Notes

Serve warm or at room temperature; you can top with ice cream, drizzle with caramel, or sprinkle with nuts for added flavor.
